Baptism is a Christian tradition and the baptism candle or christening candle has a long history. Light is an important symbol within Christianity and the baptism candle represents the movement from death to life in Christ, who is also known as the 'light of the world.
As a sign of the new life a christening candle will be lit using the flame from the Easter Candle which symbolises the light of Christ - the Light of the World. This is the light that darkness cannot overcome. Light warms and encourages, it gives safety and illuminates the way ahead. It can burn and test substances.
The baptised child, who has opened her eyes to the light of creation, is now awakened by the flame of faith. She is called to see all things through the eyes of Jesus Christ.
Baptism is the way in which the Church welcomes a child into the community of faith. The lighting of the christening candle plays a significant role on the day of the child's baptism as well as for many years ahead. The christening candle should be relit every year on the anniversary of the childs baptism/christening and prayers of thanks are given.
